2001 pontiac sunfire has a banging noise in the rear trunk area of the car, i changed the struts/shock on both side

this happens on rough road. Sounds like something is loose and jumping around in the trunk. What is causing this banging noise?

If you can try it out on a rough road, have one person first ride in the car on the rough road, then stand by the side while the other person drives the car by at the same speed - would almost certainly be able to tell you if the sound is from inside or outisde. Also - if wheel or wheel bearing issue, will usually make a growling, grinding, flopping or squeeling noise when driving by at low speed even on smooth road, so if does not do that loose item underneath is most likely - exhaust system probably most common, loose spare tire (usually more of a thump than a rattle unless the spare tire rack is under the car and hanging loose without a tire in it), broken springs or strut mounting bracket would probably be the other most common causes of this sort of noise.

Should be able to track it down yourself, though of course a emchanic between a road drive and putting it up on the lift and checking underneath should be able to find it in 15minutes or less unless a real unusual source.
