$579 for installing a central air compressor, Not the part just freon and labor?

My compressor is under warranty guy came and ask 579 for labor and freon.

Sounds like normal to me - or even lower end price if it includes full refill on Freon - which some repair firms now are charging over $100/lb for and many in the $50-70/lb range, even though it still only cost them about $20-30/lb in bulk bottles. (Your system likely takes 3-7 lbs of Freon). Plus $50-125 commonly for labor for the recharging itself, so that could easily add up to about half the amount he quoted - if you feel comfortable with this vendor, I would go for it because a much lower price from another vendor might well mean you are getting a fly-by-night one who is not going to do a good job for you.
