Question DetailsAsked on 4/15/2016

After a little over a year, a contractor's plumbing work has failed. This was an AL deal. How can we get it fixed?

This was with Elite Flooring and Remodeling. We had purchased a bathroom remodel through Angie's List. It's just over a year since the project was completed, and the shower (on the third floor of the townhouse) just yesterday started to leak through the living room ceiling. Elite's phone number is disconnected, and the contractor's mobile does not take messages. What are our options for redress?

Generally, warranty (either under state law or in contract) for a remodel would be no more than a year - so check your contract but warranty is likely expired. Though if you ask him to repair it anyway he may do so to avoid bad word of mouth - if you can get hold of them and they are still in business and care about their reputation.

I just have to say something that might make you mad, but why would you go with a bathroom remodel from a company called Elite Flooring and Remodeling - obviously flooring is their prime business, so I would not expect expertise in plumbing and tile and shower installation. Kind of like getting heart surgery from Joe's Plumbing and Cardiac Surgery.

There are at least a half dozen identical named companies in the US, so not knowing where you are I would not see if they have active website or phone number. If you have paperwork from the job and there were invoices for materials, you could call vendors or subcontractors to see if they know if Elite is still in business or if they have contact numbers.

If the written warranty is still in effect, you could contact their bonding company about paying for the repair - but that assumes the company still has their bond in effect, which if phone number is disconnected is unlikely.

Since this was a Deal, you should contact AL member services, but I bet they will say the work was too long ago to be covered under the service guarantee program, if you were eligible for that member benefit. It may actually be a newer benefit than that - not sure when it started.

Otherwise, open up the ceiling or rent a fiber optic camera scope to see if coming from piping or leaking shower floor pan. Plumbing would be your Search the List category for the first, Ceramic Tile if latter and a tile/stone floor. If leaking resin or fiberglass shower then probably another Remodeling - Kitchen and Bath contractor probably to replace the shower - though some tile contractors will install one-piece shower bases if the surround is tile or stone.
