Should a person giving me a quote on chimney repairs go up on the roof or can they give an estimate from the ground?

Thanks, squirrelgirl. I suspected that but found it so strange that 3 companies came by and all gave estimates from the ground.

A qualified sweep could give an estimate for generic repairs like Crown coating and waterproofing and chimney cap installation without going up on the roof or chimney. More detailed diagnosis can be obtained with a closer look and often additional issues can be discovered. That type of Inspection is a service in itself and should not be included in a "free estimate" . My company charges for detailed NFPA Level 1 and 2 inspections of the chimney system and proposes solutions that will bring the system into compliance with the minimum standards for structural integrity and safe use. If you decide to have my company do any of the repairs then we refund part of the inspection costs on the invoice. That seems to give customers confidence in selecting Me as their chimney sweep.

Depending on what needs to be repaired, unless the chimney has fallen over, it is very good to get up on the roof. This is the difference between a roofer and a salesman. When ever safely possible I or my authorized estimators whom all have years of roofing experience, will get on the roof.

I feel that a good inspection from the roof is the only way of gaining an intimate understanding of the roofing assembly.
