Getting Written Estimates from contractors

I am having a hard time finding workers/contractors who will provide a written estimate or work order. Even gold star Angie's List contractors have told me they don't have them or they don't do them. I find this really strange in this industry that so many would not come ready with at least a piece of paper with the company letterhead to write the job description. I have been burned before, so I really need to make sure the scope of work is clear. Should I ask when I call if they will provide a written estimate? Should I pass over those who won't? Is this really such an uncommon request?

    Hi Pariob,

Angie's List always recommends you get at least three written estimates on any job. I would recommend you ask when you call. This is not an uncommon request at all.

    Thanks,
