Had my air conditioner unit service today the technician said I should have a 1:2.5 ratio I only have a 1:2 ratio.

How big of a difference will this make in my cool themes that he finished at 3 today at 8 tonight team did not cool my house at all

OK - trying to think what ratio he could have field measured which would be in the range of 1:2 to 1:2.5, and I am drawing a blank.


The breaker and wiring capacity to the unit should be 1.25 times the rated standard run amperage of the unit and as much as the starting amperage - but that is 1.25, not 1:2.5.


I guess at some temperature and humidity condition the ratio between low and high side pressures could be 1:2.5 (though more commonly at normal operating temps 1:3 to 1:4 or a bit more), so if that is the case then a 1:2 ratio could indicate a significantly low refrigerant level or a mis-set (or malfunctioning) TXV valve, or a compressor not coming up to full pressure. But I have never heard of field technicians talking pressure ratios like that - the ratings and pressurization are done to specific pressures based on temperature/heat index rating charts for the unit.


If you have more info to help explain what he was talking about, you can respond back in this thread by using the Answer This Question yellow button right below your question. Did he say if he was talking electric current or amperage being pulled by the unit, compressor max pressure, or something to do with the refrigerant ? And I will try to make head or tails of it - or maybe BayAreaAC will jump in (he is an HVAC contractor out of the Tampa area who sometimes does answers here and is much more an HVAC expert than me).


Assuming the power/thermostat was turned back on, if it is not cooling your house noticeably in a couple to few hours in even the most severe hot, humid operating conditions (and the air should start blowing at least noticeably cool from the vents or minisplit wall unit within not more than about 5 minutes from startup), then clearly either it is not getting the signal to start up from the thermostat (in which case it which it would not turn on at all or make any noise), or it is not working right and you need a repair or adjustment of some sort.


Pity he did not explain to you exactly WHAT the problem was AND recommend a fix - he did not do his job either as a repair technician (give the cutomer the info they need to understand the situation and their options) nor as a representative of his company (give the customer the info needed to lead them to buying the repair or replacement that is needed to get their system up and running ASAP).


At this point, if you do not trust the technician or think he was just throwing out some numbers to confuse you, if he was not the owner of the company you could call and ask to talk to the manager or senior technician for an explanation, and maybe ask for a different tech to do the work that is needed. Or if you have a bad feeling overalla bout the company, call the tech to have him explain what the numbers meant and what his recommendation (and cost) for a remedy are, then decide if you want to go with another firm for a confirming diagnosis and repair (though that will cost you an additional diagnostic service call charge).
