Question DetailsAsked on 3/25/2014

How much should a 230 feet wood privacy fence (6feet high) cost (including one 4-foot gate)?

Fencing in our backyard. Looking for basic scalloped 6 foot tall, wooden privacy fence. Will need one 4 foot gate.

Wood privacy fencing costs have gone wildly erratic recently - I have seen articles and blogs on wood privacy fencing going for over $20 and even $40/LF - but I have also seen local 5 and 6 foot cedar fencing with concreted treated posts go as low as $12-15/LF in the past year. I would think that, except for bouldery or bedrock ground that requires a pneumatic drill for the holes, around $15-20/LF should be a fair price - a neighbor last fall got a 4 footer put in for several hundred feet for under $11/LF.

4 foot wide gate should be about additional $200 plus or minus $50.

I think there are a lot of rip-offs going on out there, but also wood prices have gone up quite dramatically in the past 5 years or so which might be leading contractors to cover their bets on bids. I have seen individual price jumps in just days of over 15% on construction lumber, and sometimes more than one a year.
