Question DetailsAsked on 10/30/2014

How can I find quality asphalt roof shingles when all of the mfgs. seem to be involved in class action law suits?

My 40 yr. Owens Corning Shingles have fallen apart in 19 years. In searching for replacement shingles, I cannot seem to find a shingle manufacturer that is not involved in a class action law suit. How do I determine a quality shingle when all the manufacturers are being sued?

Because of the number of people buying their products, the severe exposure they see, and the fact the manufacturers seem to be racing each other to see who can make the cheapest and lightest weight shingles, shingle manufacturers have become a magnet for class action suits. That does not mean all shingles are bad - just that they are getting too optomistic with their warranties, plus homeowners are getting more and more picky and suit-happy - expecting their house to be maintenance and damage free for 50 years, rather than accepting that things like siding and shingles are going to have a few problems at times.

Of course, some shingles have been disasters - I have seen brand new roofs that were rated for 80mph winds lose all their tabs in about 40 mph winds, as well as ones that lost all their granules in the first year or so, so there are defective ones out there.

All you can do is stay with long-term established firms with good reputations and sound economics (unfortunately, OC has had serious asbestos claims that crippled the company so some of its products went way downhill) - Tamko, Certainteed, GAF are some of the most-quoted names. Malarkey and ATCO/Atlas are a couple of other brands popular in our area that seems to hold up well. you can find a number of prior questions about specific names in the Home > Roofing link in Browse Projects, at lower left.
