How can I stop my cat from eating too fast?

Our cats seem to eat too fast at times and then throw up. We switched to the foods they are less likely to throw up from - a little canned and mostly dry, and specific brands. We feed them only a little at a time which seems to help. We also put ping pong balls in their feeding dishes to slow them down on the dry food. I've never had this problem with my other cat. We don't leave food in the dishes as they would eat too much.

Yes, one of mine does this too. I use dry food only and free feed from a large self feeder. On the very few times a year it gets empty for a few hours, this happens if I refill it and put the whole feeder right back out. The cat will pounce on the food in the newly refilled feeder, eat too much, and throw it back up within a few minutes. The only way I can keep him from doing this is to give him only a few morsels, wait 10-15 minutes, give him a few more, then put the feeder out.

I would try two things; smaller, heavier balls in the food dish and elevating the food dishes off the floor---they have to *reach up* and therefore can't gulp!

If you are feeding premium foods, there won't be grains which can cause the tummy problems you describe. Some brands are Wellness, Nature's Variety, Natural Balance, Halo's etc.

A great cat forum, the largest and friendliest IMO www.cats.about.com
