How do you know how much to budget per square foot on a deck replacement?

I wouldn't use a square footage number. I would highly suggest calling a local decking contractor to get some ballpark numbers for the type of deck, wood species, etc. that you're considering. Overall, square footage numbers are not accurate and will vary greatly from project-to-project.

I have to agree with the first person that answered your question on "How much per square footage for deck replacement?" That being said, I can give you square footage starting cost that you can figure for pressure treated wood at a starting price of $25 a sf for a simple deck, higher for extras like bench seating, planters, difficult terrain, etc.
$34 and up with a simple deck just having composite decking.
So you see, go have a decking contractor come out to ballpark it. But these figures will give you a good starting place. Stairs are extra.
