Question DetailsAsked on 8/3/2014

How much does it cost to dig an irrigation well for sprinkler system in NJ?

We currently have underground sprinklers linked to our general water/sewage line. Rather than getting a separate meter installed for the outside water only, we'd like to get a well dug in the yard and have it hooked to the sprinklers to minimize / eliminate future exterior water bills.

Click on the Irrigation Systems link right under your question - also on Home > Wells in Browse Projects at lower left - there have been a number of recent questions about wells and well-fed irrigation systems with responses that should get you started.

Of course, get several local bids after you determine that private wells are legal in your area and you can get a permit (if needed) - because well drilling costs vary widely depending on local drilling conditions and how many well drillers there are in your area, and of course how deep you need t drill - there is a WORLD of cost difference in four general ranges - less than 30 feet or so can be done with a simple soil exploration auger rig or even as an open well excavation by hand or with backhoe, 30 to 200-300 or so with a larger but easily moved around commonly available general purpose drill rig, over 300 feet to 600-800 or so takes a much larger rotary or downhole hammer rig more like an oilwell workover rig, and then for wells pushing 1000 feet on down basically takes a small oil and gas well rig which takes a substantial amountof time to mobilize and set up - not just an hour or so.
