How much would it cost to repair an outlet that has a ground where it shouldn't?

We had an general safety inspection done on a condo i want to buy, and they said one of the outlets is grounded.

do your self and every one else a favor , bring in a professional and licensed electrician to figure this out.

Not clear what the issue is - because if the outlet was live and grounded it would short out the outlet and (hopefully) trip the breaker - or maybe that is what has happened so the circuit is tripped-out now.


All outlets should be grounded - to the body of the outlet, though there are some every old 2 wire-homes around without ground wires at all, and some newer homes with 2-wire wiring and outlets (2-prong outlets without the round ground prong hole) which is a REALLY good example of manufacturer pressure changing a safety feature for the worse.


Anyway, fixing bad wiring in an outlet should only cost minimum service call charge of thypically $75-150 depending on labor cost area - plus maybe $5 or so for a new outlet (up to $50-75 or so if 220V outlet for range or dryer or such) if that one is broken, which might be what was meant - that it is broken and internally a live wire or bus is contacting ground. Remotely possible it is actually a defective or damaged wire in the wall somewhere which could welll run several times that cost by the time drywall is repaired and repainted and such, but that is pretty rare.


Assuming you are still in the "contingency" period, sounds like a good thing to require the owner have fixed before closing - talk to your realtor about getting this (and any other significant deficiencies) fixed by the owner before closing - you typically have a couple week or so "inspection period" to get inspections done and get a list of items that you need fixed to make the deal a real deal.
