Question DetailsAsked on 3/12/2014

How much does it cost per square foot to paint the interior of a house?

We just bought roughly a 1500 sg ft townhouse and want to get the entire house, including ceilings painted (including a roughly 400 sq ft finished basement not included in square footage). We have started patching and sanding but we are running out of time until we have to move in. Just trying to get a rough idea of how much it will cost per sq ft. Also, do painters charge by the area of the room or the area of the walls to be painted?

They figure based on how much material it will take, care needed in protecting floors and trim and such, and how long they think it will take to do the composite job. Basically, however, it works out to a SF of area being painted equivalent as that is the area actually being painted, not at all directly related to the floor plan or real estate square footage.

If you are doing the whole house the numbers provided in the answers will be high - for a whole-house job you will get a discount because they can do it production- and be on to another room while one is drying after washing or first coat or whatever.

Try small painting companies we're the owner is the lead painter and the helpers have been working with him for several years. Most of the larger contractors don't have the experienced painters to do good clean work. And allways get reference from other home owners . Interior painting could be anywhere from $1 to 3 labor depends on how much prep, how many colors and how pickie the customer is.
