Question DetailsAsked on 5/23/2016

How do you deal with a nextdoor neighbor that has a backyard wreaking of dog xxxx and urine/excessive barking?

This is a townhome community so you can see a lot more. On top of the poop/ xxxx situation that the neighbor is lazy about addressing, the dogs even bark a lot, sometimes at you and sometimes late at night. At wits end...

Nicely and cautiously.

If in a planned community/condo development etc like you might be, you can complain through the homeowners/condo owners association and they should issue a letter to him to abate the situation.

Smell - depending on locale, either city/county Health Department, or Animal Control. Barking - Animal Control in most areas, Police in a few on disturbing the peace charges.

Generally, upon first complaint they will send a notification letter that they have received a complaint, second time a warning letter. Typically to get an actual citation issued either the problem has to be evident to the enforcement officer from your property or the street (they generally do not have warrant powers) - and generally they have to disclose WHO made the complaint, so there may be a factor there to consider depending on how psycho the neighbor might be.

Certainly, if on decent terms with this person, start by nicely commenting about the smell and barking and ask if he can control it - though with someone who lets that sort of situation persist you are not dealing with the nicest person in the first place, so don't have great hopes.
