How to remove clear strips from edges of lexus doors -really have to remove all handles and then repaint doors?

Lexus puts thin strips along edges of all doors, and on the curve under each door handle to "protect" the paint. UNfortunately, after 5 years the clear plastic is black and cracked and looks awful. How can I remove this and replace it myself (if desired) versus having Lexus do each door by removing handles, using a wheel to roll off the plastic which "will definitely damage the paint, requiring us to have to repaint all four of your doors at a cost of approximately $1,100 per door." I think this is shocking. Wouldn't something like GOO GONE remove the plastic without harming the paint? PLease help...I fear Lexus is ripping me off again.
