Question DetailsAsked on 1/24/2015

How much should a sump pump replacement cost in the DC metro area?

Our basement sump pump died and needs to be replaced. We got a quote of $875, including the actual sump pump which they will just buy at Home Depot.

Your Search the List category for competing bids is Plumber. Of course, how desperately you need the sump pump (current inflow rate and potential impact if you get heavy rains in this upcoming storm) affects how quickly this needs to be replaced, hence suitability of getting alternative bids.

Cost depends of course on your pump size and how high it is lifting the water, but for a normal 1-2-3/4HP pump lifting say 6 feet or so up to the discharge pipe, that price is roughly double what I would expect to see. If a unit with complete emergency backup system the quotae you got would be in the range for a complete replacement - but normally only the pump or maybe even only the pump motor or impeller unit part wouldneed replacement if it failed.

Of course, if this was for immediate installation - probably double labor rate on weekend, then it is a lot to pay but if you need it now, probably in the ballpark.

If you have time, I would get at least one more quote if your basement is not flooding or if you are easily able to keep up by manually bailing the sump a couple of times a day with a bucket or cut-off milk jug or soda bottle (depending on clearance to get in beside the pump).

I just got a quote in Southern Maryland for $746 plus a $109 service call so similar to your quote.
