Question DetailsAsked on 8/16/2016

I need to know if American Veterans United in California is a legitimate non-profit organization and if Frank Rente

I am in the process of renting a room from a Frank Renteria in Oxnard, California. The only verification of his identity he has given me is his business card as Vice President of American Veteran's United, a non-rofit organization. I have seen the home and the room and it seems legitimate, but I don't know how to protect myself if this is a rental scam off of Craig's List.

There is a profile and photo for him on the organization website -

The organization has a website with group photos, meeting records, newsletter, etc - a lot of effort went into this website if a scam. Howevder, the organization does NOT show up on Charity Navigator, Charity Watch, or Military-Money-Matters (which all review charities) so not a major one anyway.

Here is a link to Ventura County records office

telling how you can obtain property owner info on a particular property address - which should tell if he actually owns that address or not.

You could also ask him, noting your concern about rental fraud, for proof that he is the one who pays the property taxes (safest) or at least utility statements showing him as the person paying the utility bills.

Digging deeper, but requires a visit to county recorder's office, would be to check the property ownership records - both for name of owner, and for whether there are liens or delinquent mortgage or assessments which could indicate maybe he does not actually control the property or might be about to lose it.
