Question DetailsAsked on 10/16/2016

I need to replace the thermostat for my attic fan. It is a metal box. I can't get it open to unhook the wires.

I already turned the breaker off. I see the metal line that comes into the box from the fan and the white flat wire that goes out from the thermostat box. I just can't figure out how to get the metal housing of the thermostat open to unhook the wires.

If this is a regular metal (or plastic) electrical box like lights and outlets are mounted in/on, look to see if other side is accessible from other side of wall or such - will have a cover plate on it with normally 2 short screws - if "finish" cover (plastic or bakelite or such) one in top and bottom, if a square or octagonal box usually alternate corners.

If this is just a bent sheet metal cover, look for two mounting screws on flanges on the cover, fastening it to the fan motor or housing. Or sometimes the cover will have recessed flange tabs inserted into slots or openings in the fan motor casing - sometimes you press the sides together to disengage the tabs from the slots (much like a press-to-turn childproof pill bottle lid), other times the flanges have ears or slotted tabs on them and you have to slide the cover up or down on the housing a portion of an inch (up or down relative to the tabs) to disengage the ears. Liek the metal tabs that are used to assemble sheet metal toys like toy barns and some toy cars and trucks and such. Works sort of like a finger crooked in a hole punched in a 6-pack box of soda cans to carry it - the finger goes down into hole and slides "back" under the box surface to engage - to remove it (assuming there is not room to just straighten the finger out) you have to move it horizontally in the hole to disengage the bent finger from the box before you can lift it out the slot or opening - same principle. Slide the cover along the housing in the direction of the slots that the tabs are going into - about 1/4" of movement usually - until it disengages the slotted tabs then lift up and off.
