Question DetailsAsked on 12/14/2013

Is an Ultraviolet Air Disinfection System a good add on for a SW FL AC system?

My mother has a UV light system that seems to be sold in this area to kill mold in the AC System. It is basically a very expensive UV light bulb and a power supply with a ballast. The notion is that the UV light kills the nasty stuff that does indeed grow in the evaporator section of the AC system.

The instructions are very emphatic that the bulb must be changed every year and the best price I can find on the correct bulb replacement is about $105 online. Add a reasonably priced service call to replace the bulb and were talking upwards of $175/year.

I would appreciate any input on the merits of these UV systems and any other advice on this particular topic.

Thanks in advance

UVC light9s) installed over evaporator do reduce/prevent microbial growth on the evaporator coil.Th growth they destroy and prevent does cause an increase in operating cost for the system, so there is some savings. Plus the coil may never become imacted(clogged), which saves sevral hundred dollars to "pull and clean" it.

That said a better filter may yield similar results, and I mean a 4" thick filter sold by Pros, not a 3M Filtrete, but 3M is another issue.

Your are correct, change yearly, even though it is still lite, it is not working.Never lok directly at the light, it will damage your eyes.
