How deep are the scratches? Also, are there just a few in one area or are there many in the room? I've used colored wax sticks to fill in just a few light scratches before, but I don't think they'd be as useful for deep scratches.

Yes, there is a way to make light scratches and scuffs disappear AND improve the quality of your floor's shine without sanding. However, this only works if the problems are mild. If the scratches are deep or if the wood's grain is raised from water or weathering, sanding is your only option. If your floor problem is relatively mild, you'll need to find a wood restoration contractor who uses a non-sanding wood restoration method. The cost is about a quarter of the sanding method and MUCH less messy and instrusive to your life Photos of actual before and after projects can be found here.
