John Deere Lawn Tractor mower deck will not engage with tractor

Assuming the engine is running well, my first guess would be the drive belt is too loose or broken - some X300's have a belt tensioning adjustment lever, some not - but could be the belt has stretched, broken, or the linkage from the belt engagement lever to the belt is disconnected or broken.

You can see the parts list and parts breakout diagram here - put in X300 as model number (or X300R if that is what you have)

IF instead you meant the removeable mowing deck will not hook back onto the tractor after you had it off to use the tractor for towing an implement - then you need to look at the engagement points to see if one is broken or not latching right, or if something is blocking the deck from coming all the way up into the engagement points.

If unable to fix it yourself, a John Deere dealer with repair facility (dealer search tool on John Deere website) or a Mower and Tool Repair shop is what you need. Some will come and get it and return it after repair for a fee if you don't have the means to get it to the shop.
