Course, unless you would be cutting away the major supporting roots on one side of the tree so it would blow over, you can just cut a trench (get utilities located first of course) a few feet away from the patio edge on the edge(s) where tree roots are a problem, down to the depth where the roots stop (from 3-12 inches deep in many cases, occasionally several feet deep), cut away the roots you hit, and put a root barrier there.
