Moving from SC to Maine. Any ideas on a great moving company?

From my experience with both short-distance commercial moves and with several cross-country moves - Bekins is who I choose. Allied and North American have pretty good reputations too - Atlas commonly is cheapest but has somewhat of a reputation for breakage (maybe they don't train their people in packing right ?) - Mayflower I have heard a fair amount of bad things about.

I would definitely go with a brandname company - they have more reputation to defend if you have a claim issue so more likely to be reasonable.

And don't forget the normal moving insurance is only $0.60/lb allocated PER ITEM (NOT $0.60/lb for the whole shipment availAble to cover any damage in the shipment - so say a 60# dining table would have $36 coverage for damage, not maybe a few thousand coverage for a normal household goods shipment weighing a few tons applicable to any damage in the shipment as you would think - it is normally, for default insurance, applied on a pear-pound basis to each damaged item) - but either way nowhere near the cost of almost anything that could get damaged - so get supplemental insurance. More on that in the Home > Moving link in Browse Projects, at lower left, where you will also find other comments on preferred moving companies.

And note your homeowner's insurance, unless you buy the sometimes available supplemental coverage, do not commonly cover household goods during a move, and even if it does commonly covers not more than 30 days in storage at either end, so consider that too.
