My John Deere xl series when I engage the clutch and put it into gear it will not move. Any ideas?

Belt driven when clutch is engaged the transmission does move the machine. Mower deck engages fine

I presume you mean LX series, not XL ? XL is Ikon mowers, as I recall. JD LX 200, 300, 400 series etc is what I presume you mean.


Ones I have seen/worked on for friends have two belts, one for mower deck, one for drive. The drive one, even if the belt is good, can slip and not provide propulsion not only if the belt breaks or stretches too long with wear, but also if the clutch throw gets out of whack (so it does not properly engage the belt) and also if the adjustment spring (which pulls tight on an idler pulley to keep the belt at proper tension) breaks or gets dislodged. I have seen the latter from taking a good sized rock or limb in under the mower).
