Assuming your sink is routinely used (so the trap has water in it to stop normal sewer gas escape), you undoubtedly have a partial drain/sewer line blockage, or if on septic and this is a close to ground or below ground level kitchen possibly an overfull septic system.

Washing machine is usually your greatest/fastest draining fixture, so problems with blockages appear first when it is emptying, then can gradually or sometimes very quickly develop to a near to almost total blockage, so should be cleared quickly.

What happens is the water (say 30-50 gallons) drains from the washer, and because there is a blockage fills the pipes up upstream of the blockage - so the gases in the drain lines pushes upstream. If the blockage or backed up water is upstream of the vent pipe connection to the drain line (either main vent or individual fixture) then it cannot excape above the roof and backs up through the trap - sometimes burgling up through (usual first indication of a problem, in basement or ifno basement bottom floor floor drains, tubs/showers, sinks usually in that order. In serious cases (pretty complete blockage) or very low drains (basement floor drain, tub/shower, laundry tub) it can sometimes push the water in the trap out and into the fixture.

LOTS of previous similar questions about gurgling drains or backup of water into fixtures can be found in the Home > Plumbing link under Browse Projects, at lower left.

Plumbing and Sewer/Drain Cleaning would be your normal Search the List category for someone to clean your drain/sewer line - Plumber normally for in-house blockage, other for clearing main line all the way to the street or septic tank.
