Services that charge for estimates

I’m a first time homeowner and now that my husband and I almost have the last of our boxes unpacked we’re looking at all the landscaping, repair and home improvement projects we want to do. Some small ones we’ll do on our own but we’ll also be contracting masonry workers, structural engineers, basement water proofers, exterminators, etc. I’m curious to know, which types of services generally provide free estimates and which ones charge for estimates? I’m also wondering why there is a charge for an estimate. We’d like to have at least two or three bids to compare before signing a contract for work but I don’t want to unnecessarily throw away hundreds of dollars on obtaining estimations.
