Question DetailsAsked on 5/25/2011

Should I hire a general contractor or individual contractors?

We are planning on a number of small jobs now and some big jobs later (stock market turn around please!!) The big jobs will include, new or refinishing hardwood floors on one level, new carpet on the other, remodeling two small baths, and a full remodel (walls and stuff) on a master bath. I don't know if we can/should hire one contractor for all the big work, or just hire individual firms per job.

I would get a bathroom remodeling guy to do the bathrooms, a flooring guy to do the hardwood floors. Carpet stores install carpet.

I would think you would save a lot more money having different companys doing certain jobs. Your remodeler will just hire subs to do the individual jobs anyway.

It depends how many points of contact that you are willing to deal with. If you hire a GC, you have one. If you hire it out individually, you will have 10+.

It all boils down to how much time you have and how much you want to be involved, I suppose.
