You can find a LOT of previous questions with answers to this issue in the Home > Basement Waterproofing link under Browse Projects - including some with fairly complete checklists of causes and solutions that work in different cases. In most cases getting/keeping the water away form the foundation solves the problem - especially in cases like yours where it only happens during heavy rains - go outside during heavy rains once the water has started seeping through and you will likely be able to directly see the source of the water.

Here also are a couple of those with an introductory coverage FYI:

Basement Waterproofing in the normal Search the List category for waterproofing - Landscaping for regrading to improve drainage around the house, and Gutters of course for roof gutters.
