Commonly, for a small day or two repair job as this sounds like - nothing unless there is significant materials purchase cost up-front, in which commonly about half the materials cost up-front (assuming normal materials which can be returned - not special-ordered). If special-ordered, commonly the full cost of the special order items.


If this is a case where they are reserving a future work date, then 10% is a common deposit, to be applied to the job when it is done, and commonly non-refundable if they cancel the job without good cause.
