What questions should I ask a property manager when inquiring about the rental of an apartment?

I'll be getting my first apartment/condo soon and I want to make sure I have all of the information I'll need to decide where the best place for me to live is.

This assumes you are not sharing with a roommate

1. Length of lease and penalties for breaking it
2. Security (and pet) deposit
3. Date rent is due and late fees
4. Are utilities (gas, electric, water, sewage and trash included
5. Parking/garage/storage
6. What appliances are furnished (stove, fridge, microwave, washer/dryer)
7. How is the initial walk-through conducted - will any previous damage be written in the contract
8. Length of notice for vacating
9. Noise restrictions
10. Subletting restrictions
11. Exactly what monies are refunded at the end of lease

Hi, kd.

Jannie has some great questions you should ask. If you're looking at a house, always ask whether the landlord intends to put the property up for sale at some point. Most times, the landlord can break your lease when he or she puts the house on the market.
