When replacing the reversing valve on a heatpump should you replace the dryer??

Replacing the reversing valve, should the dryer also be replaced since you are removing the refrigerant from the system?

For the $25-50 additional I certainly would - and most certainly if any cleaning or test solution was put into the line, because that will accumulate in the dryer and reenter the system as a contaminant as it runs after the repair. And certainly if the system was flushed with the dryer in place, because contaminants in the line would end up in there and might travel back into the system from it. Why risk it - I would change it while the system is depressurized.

And yes again when changing a reversing valve out, because one of the main causes of their failure is gumming up with sludged compressor lubricant or carbon from an overheated compressor - which would also have probably gummed up the filter/dryer.

Sort of like changing the $5 oil filter on your car when doing an oil change - why would you NOT do it considering the low cost and the protection it gives you.
