Question DetailsAsked on 1/10/2017

Which manufacturer makes a quality fiberglass entry door? We don't want it to look like plastic.

We are replacing our front door and can go with wood or fiberglass that looks like wood. Just having a hard time narrowing choices - so many companies online, but few available to see actual quality in-store. We want quality that does not look like plastic. Looked online and at books of thermatru, provia, plastpro, etc. Any recommendations from experience with these brands?

Basically, an unfinished fiberglass door is going to look fakey. Properly staining it with a heavy-body (normally gel type) stain and sealer, or painting it, can make it look more like any other painted door, but unless factory painted/stained you are commonly going to have delamination/peeling issues, because few painters go to the trouble of properly prepping the surface so the finish adheres properly over the long run.

As to experience with specific brands - I have never heard of any of those - must a box store brands ? And I couldnot help much anyway with any brand, because my inclination has always been to avoid fiberglass/plastic doors and windows as much as possible, and I only have any experience with higher-end name brands.

My recommendation if you want a security rated door or one with better insulation and minimal/no maintenance for many long years, go with steel. If you want one with true wood appearance, go with wood - or a wood panelled steel door, though they have a tendency to behave poorly (laminate warps and peels) if they are not totally protected from rain.

You say few available to look at in store - have you tried a true millwork shop that sells doors and windows, or are you talking a home imporvement box store ? Maybe you need to go to a true door and window dealer to see many examples.

You can find previous questions about the best quality doors, with some responses (though mightly few on fiberglass) in the Home > Doors (or is it Doors and Windows ?) Link in Browse Projects, at lower left.
