Would it be worthwhile to replace cpvc pipe in an unheated attic space of 150' with plex

Silly place for piping if attic gets below freezing EVER. Actually, piping should not be in an attic exposed to freezing conditions without either heating or continuous recirculation. The latter is rare in four-plexes or less but not uncommon in larger multi-family buildings.


I can't image it would - with PEX you are about, according to a couple of references I looked at, 5-8% less heat loss than with copper - not much of a difference. With CPVC, 20-35% less heat loss range - still prone to a LOT of heat loss. So - if you were talking replacing because of heat loss, CPVC is better.


You did not say why you were talking replacing it - personally I prefer CPVC to PEX - less failulre prone under normal conditions, and the connections do not require just the right materials and touch to get right - all too many brands are still prone to connections leaks or the pex popping out of the connection, or splitting of the PEX. I recommend against it whereever stick pipe can feasibly be put in, though it is a LOT cheaper in cases where you are trying to replace existing pipe in tight places or in walls and floors.


I would put the money into insulation - insulating only the "cold" side, leaving the other side of the pipe (towards the house) exposed to the house heat - assuming this is on top of or in insulation now. If totally exposed to the air I would look at rerunning it so it is down close to the ceiling to get heated by that, plus proper insulation over the top - like minimum R-13 batt, more in colder areas. And the insulation has to be at least 15" wide or so (centered on the pipe) to do any substantial good, otherwise it will just lose heat to the side and around the insulation.
