cost to replace wood fascia

what is the cost to remove old wood and replace with new wood 2x8 fascia boards on a two story house plus 3 gables. Approximately 100 linear feet needs replaced of existing total of 260 feet

Cost depends significantly on several items, in addition to local labor costs of course - these items are also issues that should be resovled up front and included (as applicable) in the scope of work. The below cost ranges would be for normal labor conditions - could be 15-25% lower in very low cost areas with a handyman with low overhead, and as much as 50 to even potentially 100% more in very high cost areas, especially if a union-controlled locale where the workers might get up to twice the nationwide average wage.


1) are the boards being preprimed and painted on the ground and then going up, without painting once up - or perhaps only fine-tip paintbrush touchup of nail heads at most. Or is painting going to have to (for some reason) be done in-place. Also - is rest of fascia being cleaned and painted to match ? Or are the fascia boards getting metal fascia cover - which can easily add $10-20/LF to the cost by the time you shape and color match them to the existing.


2) do you have gutters that have to be removed and replaced to access the fascia


3) do you have soffit covers that have to be removed and replaced because they are suspended off the back side of the fascia board - and are the hanger strips nailed or screwed onto the fascia, and are they heavy-duty enough to support removal and then putting them back on, or are they going to have to be replaced because they are too flimsy to survive removal. Or worse, are soffit covers fastened directly to the fascia board, meaning great care has to be taken, in removal to avoid having to replace soffit covers too.


4) is the roof sheathing nailed into the fascia board so that will have to be cut loose (commonly is, especiallyin hurricane country), then refastened after new board is up - meaning new ice and water shield strip and possibly drip edge (if attached to the sheathing) along that edge also.


5) is there dripedge attached directly to the fascia board so will also need replacement with the fascia board


6) is there rot in the rafter tails behind the fascia that will have to be resolved


7) how high is the bulk of the work area from the ground, and is any of the work over normal second-story height (about 15-16' from ground). In particular, is there adequate roof in front of the gables to stand on to work on the fascia boards there, or are you talking 20+ feet of ladder work or working upside down off the gable roof to access it - or is the gable a low gable where they could sit in the window and do the work.


8) plantings or pool or canopy or fixed awning or such under work area that interfere with access


All in all, prices can commonly range from around $6-7/LF for straight-forward simple single-story ranch knotty pine fascia with single-coat primer-and-finish-coat-in-one paint (both low quality products) to more like $10/SF range for good quality wood like hem-fir with priming and double-coat paint and touchup (or prime and single coat plus second coat after it is up) on normal 2 story house (commonly more like $15/LF if gutters or soffit covers have to be removed and replaced), to as much as $20/LF where a number of the above complicating factors come into play. And I have seen it exceed that in cases where scaffolding is needed to access the work because the scaffolding cost to erect and move around (or more commonly rent a high-reach boom-type manlift) is very high on a per-foot basis because the amount of work being done is small compared to the scaffolding/lift costs.


You definitely need to talk with several contractors about this to find out what the "fair market price" for your particular area and circumstances are - and expect to see a 2-3:1 difference in quotes if you have complicating factors or if you allow uninsured/unbonded bidders.


Normal Search the List categories for this work include Handymen (if you have one you know you can trust and who has or can get a helper), Roofing, and Carpenters. Some Gutter companies also do this (particularly if there is gutter removal and replacement or new gutters involved).


You don't say WHY you want to replace these fascia boards - if due to rot or severe splitting due to weathering, no choice. If because it is too much trouble to keep them painted, it is possible that fascia covers might serve your purpose - though at typically $5-10/LF for vinyl or $7-15 for metal, since you would likely have to do the entire house to match, there would be no short-term benefit to that. And depending on how your roof flashing and trim and ice-and-water-shield is configured, it might be that could not be readily done until reroof time.
