gas water heater burner stays lit and works fine outside of the tank, but put inside it doesn't burn right

wierd. replaced thermocouple. lit outside of tank and it works perfectly. but in side the tank the gas doesn't flow around the burner, just seems to "pool" and then goes out after a few seconds.

like all fuel fires you must have oxygen to support the flame and it sounds like your air flow is blocked either at the intake to the bunner or the exhaust duct has become blocked by bugs, mice, birds , or debri. an inspection for blocked or restricted air flow is your first move.

hope this helps.

actually, i found that this model has a glass overhead fusable glass link that melts if it gets too hot. that closes the air intake channels. the vents are unobstructed so no idea why that fuse melted. is about 8 years old so maybe just fatigue.

second thing to test is ihe flame sensor. some water heaters have a sensor that signals the gas valve to shut off if the flame is not detected shortly after the ignition to prevent the accumulation of explosive gas in the burner and exhaust pipe. this is a very common issue if the burner is not cleaned and serviced regulary. hope this helps.
