An average cost probably will not help you much, because you are averaging $400-1000 gas log inserts for wood burning fireplaces to $800-2000 ventless stand-alone units with $2000-4000 wood burning chimney inserts to $4000-10000 new-build outside-air and vented units that look and are dimensionally much like a real fireplace.

Please note the commentary on the interior water issues with ventless units, especially if you are in a cold climate with cold windows for condensation to form on in the winter.
