Obviously depends on your sepcific building configuration, sun exposure, the efficiency you want (can make 50-100% range difference from lowest to highest), number of zones you have or need, existing ducting and its adequacy or not, etc. You can get some ballpark ideas of system types and costs in the Home > HVAC link in Browse Projects, at lower left.

For a specific evaluation, you need a Heating and AC contractor (or several) to measure your system and ducts and so forth, then run through the ACCA Manuals to determine required system sizing, duct adequacy, number of zones needed and if current are adequate, and amount of airflow each area needs. Then, with that sizing data in hand, you can get competitive bids for comparable systems, and compare economy versus higher efficiency unit installed cost bids versus teh energy savings you would expect with the different system efficiencies.

Of course, how long you plan to stay in that place makes a big difference too - since in all but extreme desert climes you will not recover your installed cost at resale, putting in a very high efficiency system will not pay off if you move every few years.
