Here are some links to MD state info on allowable deposits and home improvement contract requirements and such FYI - looks like the state allows up to a 1/3 deposit upon contract signing - so looks like up-front deposit of $300 is his limit. Though the contract can require progress payments too - like maybe $300 up front, $300 when drywall/plaster repair is done and ready to paint and remainder after job is complete and accepted by you might be fair to both parties ? That gives you a 1/3 amount which is not released till final job acceptance, so gives you a fair hold over him to be sure the job actually gets done, which from your viewpoint is a good thing to have.
