For superior attic ventilation air must have an entrance and exit that is higher. Hot air rises hence the higher exit point, A continious ridge vent is the perfect storm of being passive (meaning not consuming energy) and available 24 hours a day. If you can get matching shingles it can be retrofited by any roofer (see Angie's List ). If you do not have a significant ridge (I have seen homes with huge footprint and 15' of ridge) A power vent or solar powered vent is an option. Attic ventilation is a bigger energy need in winter than summer. Moisture that exfiltrates from the home below if not allowed to escape will cause damage and reduce your insulations effectiveness.
