In my experience the well is usually not the problem. It is usually a leak in the line. Do you have a pressure gauge? Usually there is one next to the pressure tank. Take a look at it and see if the pressure reading stays steady after the pump is off. If the pressure drops, then you have a leak in the pipe. If the pressure doesn't drop, check to see if there is a check valve on the pipe coming in from the well to the pressure tank. (the check valve will keep the water from draining back into the pipe, but will also make it hard to determine if there is a leak on the incoming pipe.) Usually, the leak is on/in the pipe going from the well to the house or pressure tank. And usually, the well has at least one (sometimes 2) check valves. Yes, sometimes they malfunction, but not very likely.
So anyway, you need to find a Leak Detective near you. Note; some plumbers will tell you that they can locate the leak, but the honest ones will tell you that they cannot and refer you to a Leak Detective that can, and offer to repair the leak once it is found.
