Assuming you have about 400 SF (a typical living room) or more to do, the following gives you a ballpark. I give per square foot pricing - be aware most carpet quote are per SY (square yard, = 9 SF):

Carpet and padding cost $2-$10 - lowest number is plain-jane low-traffic low-pile polyester acrylic carpet likely to last about 5 years (usually used only in bedrooms), $5 will get you a name-brand heavy-traffic hall and living room 20 year carpet, $10/SF top-end luxury deep-pile, $10-50/SF for really high-end decorative, persian, custom monogrammed or pattern, shearling, silk etc. carpet.

Removal and Installation (replacing other carpet or similar no-prep surface- NOT tearing up of hardwood, tile, or such) - $1.50-2.00/SF, up to double that if doing custom cut pattern (using several colors to border or make a pattern).

So - total installed $3.50-5.00 cheap to midrange carpet, up to $10/SF for very good carpet, all the way up to $50/SF plus for decorator luxury product.
