what is average cost to repair a wet well? House I am interested in, has a wet well and its wall has collapsed.

The wet well could be repaired but it would need a local person to investigate and possibly replace defective cistern.

Any average would be useless - each case would be unique - depending on depth, diameter, whether hand-dug and built or drilled, concrete or steel or brick or concrete block or wood lining, etc. Also on whether it can readily be pumped dry to work on or if they will be working in the wet or need a very large pump because it is trying to drain down the water table for the entire town.


If wall is collapsing, probably brick or wood lining.


Many Well and Pump contractors do these, also a very few Plumbers, and probably a few Foundation Repair contractors. Basement Waterproofing is another category that might, because they sometimes install new ones. Also, many Drain Pipe Installation - Exterior contractors do these - if not deep, this is likely your best category. You are probably going to have to call around.


As I said, cost anyone's bet - but I would bet $500 plus bare minimum if relatively easy to pump out and sized for easy man access - almost certainly $1000-2000 range if done by a contractor abiding by OSHA required Confined Space Entry regulations, likely more if deeper than about 8 feet or so.


In some cases, especially for small diameter and deep ones, it can be cheaper (rather than to try to fix in-place in a collapsing situation) to build a new one close to it, swap over the sump pump or the exit drain connection, fill the old one with clean gravel and connect to the new one and then cover it to act as an additional storage volume.


If doing a new one, be careful about buried utilities - including septic tank and leach field and proiximity to well, if applicable.

Note - you said "house I am interested in" - if a buyer, why not just make the repair or replacement (plan and final product subject to your approval) a contingency item for the SELLER to do before closing - then you are not stuck with the risk it will cost a lot more once the contractor gets in there.
