You will probably get as many answers as there are people washing houses - I think the pre-wetting to promote distribution over the entire surface, and sit time (about 10 minutes) and not letting it dry on the surface is more important than the detergent itself. For serious staining (though can damage underlying plants if not protected) a good phosphate containing laundry detergent like Tide Plus works well for hand washing, though not good for pressure washing application. For normal washing of just accumulated dust, Dawn (premixed with water if using with pressure washer) dishwashing detergent works nicely and does not leave a soap film behind with single-pass rinsing.

I know a couple of pro house washers and painters I know who swear by Zinsser House and Siding Washing detergent (a commercial pressure washing concentrate), some homeowners swear by Simple Green House and Siding wash.
