Question DetailsAsked on 8/23/2015

what is the cause of wet carpet on concrete slab floor?

I have a window ac unit in my bedroom and, at first thought it was leaking into the wall/floor somehow. A friend helped me to tilt the unit more, and I vacuumed the carpet with the shop vac, an laid down towels..the wet area is getting bigger. The house was built in 1987 and is in central florida. We have had more rain this summer than I've ever seen and I've lived in the house 13 years.

Track the wetness - leaking condensate tray under A/C, leaking in around the A/C, leak around window freame are three most likely, though you always have the possibility of a baseboard or in-floor heating system leak or a water pipe leak in the wall. OBviously, if spreading and it has been raining water around/through A/C or window is most likely, if spreading when it has NOT been raining then pipe leak or A/C condensate is more likely.
For professional evaluation - tossup between plumber or HVAC contractor or Handyman. You have probably about 2 days before carpet starts getting moldy, so you have to track it down - or pull back carpet and padding and loop up to dry (with a big fan) and look for water spread on the floor underneath.
