2007 PT Cruiser brakes sound horrible!

i have a 2002 Cruiser, used, that has been terrific. BUT, the brakes sound HORRIBLE. They squeek and grind something fierce. I've had them looked at and worked on by three different people and places to no relief. Any suggestions?

For the last 10 years I have driven Chrysler/Dodge vehicles and I must say that the worst thing about them is having to deal with issues related to the brakes. I had a 2001 Chrysler Voyager that I purchased, used at 30K miles and I had to have the brakes replaced every 15K miles. Now this was not just the front brakes or the back brakes, but it was both front and back including the rotors. The rotors were so shot that they couldn't even be turned. I finally got rid of it round 98K miles because of that.

Oh, One more thing I forgot to add - check out your bearings - both right and left front. Often times the brakes are blamed but I remember when I had a 95 Inteprid - I had the brakes done and still had the grinding noise and we had the driver side bearings replaced and then about a month after that had to have the right side replaced as well.

A known problem with Dodge/Chrysler vehicles from that era - I had the same problem with a 2003 Dodge SUV making serious ridges and grooves in the rotors in less than 500 miles. Problem as the mechanic and I saw it is the semi-metallic pads have giant pieces of metal in them (one of my pads had a single piece over 2 inches long which gouged a front rotor which is what caused me to take it in) and some are on edge, not flat - so they gouge the rotor causing grabbing, squeeling, howling. I have also heard of this problem from several other dodge/chrysler owners and from several mechanics and service reps at the dealership I bought it from. There was a TSB on ours paying for rotor and pad replacement if this problem occurred in the basic warranty period even though brakes are normally not covered - but you have to know about the TSB and ASK for it to be done at no charge, and of course in your case the car is too old for this to apply now.

And yes - I have driven PT Cruisers as a dealer loaner car - I think the sound is much worse with them because there seems to be almost no front-end sound insulation on them - you can hear an incredible amount of tire noise and engine sound on a cruiser - reminds me of a Yugo or 60's Beetle.

The TSB was not yet out at that time so I just replaced the pads with top-line NAPA semi-metallic pads which ground off the ridges in the rotor just in normal use, and the pads lasted 90,000 miles before they were uniformly almost down to the rivets - and at replacement the front rotors were just halfway through their wear allowance (rears only about 1/3) so just changed pads and drive on and don't expect rotor replacement to be needed before about 160,000-180,000 miles. Course, we drive defensively and conservatively and tend to gradually drift into stops and leave a lot of space between us and the car ahead, so we do not use the brakes as hard as many people do.

Depending on how severly your rotors are gouged, you might or might not be able to get away with new pads but only turning the rotors - with that age vehicle pretty unlikely you can repad without returning because signfiicant ridges will selectively erode the pads, and of course if you have ridges and grooves the pads are not touching the groove areas so you will get poor stopping efficiency and overheating because of the greater point friction at the ridges. And of course if worn beyond the turning limit then new rotors are required - not a cheap thing.
