If product is custom order ie not resalable (like drapes or cabinets) and the company is reputable making a good faith deposit is okay. You have to judge if they meet these criteria but 100% is highway robbery and tell them so. It is ok to ask for the moon but not expect it, so if you want to counteroffer feel free to do so. Dont let them catch you like they do monkeys, with a hand full of rice inside a jar the monkeys clenched fist is to big to pull out. Most company's expect payment in full when job is completed. Any questions on results withhold sufficient funds to give them incentive to fix problem (s).

No this is not comon most of the time the will only ask for material cost up front. Thin after completion they will ask to be paid. Sounds like scam artist to me. Contracters that ask up front for your money. Are usualy out to rob you. Thell take your money up front thin they will split and you will never see them again.
