Adding electric outlet and a 15 AMP breaker

Hi i am looking to add a new outlet that could be connected to its own 15 AMP breaker in my finished basement so that I can run my dehumidifier in the summer and space heater in the winter without having to worry about overloading the other zones. I would have the new outlet installed right next to the breaker box. Would something like this be considered minor electrical work? Also what would be a good estimated range of the cost to do this? I live in Long Island ny. Thanks so much!

ASSUMING your breaker box is not up top capacity - either for total installed breaker capacity or number of breakers, typically about $50 for the breaker (wired) and about $100-200 for the outlet and wiring to it it within a few feet, and assuming no interference with pipes or such in the wall in between. Since in one of the highest priced labor areas, maybe better say about $100 materials total and $200-250 labor - so about $300-350 total, NOT including any drywall repair or repainting though if able to put within a stud of the breaker box a good electrician can do this without any drywall damage of note that is not covered by the outlet plate.

A thought - dehumidifier probably OK unless very large, but a normal space heater worth anything for spaceheat is 1500-2500W - more than a 15A circuit can safely carry. A circuit should not carry over 80% of its rated capacity as a continuous load (which a heater is) - so your circuit should probably be more like MAYBE (barely) 15A for 1250W heater, 20A for 1500W, or 25A FOR 2000W. (As I recall, your area has a special building code provision requiring figuring 110V in computing circuit amperage, so the amperage ratings shown are a size above what some others might compute for each load - but for the extra $10-20 in materials and no change in labor, why not size a bit larger - though breaker size of course would be based on actual code requirement for the exact heater wattage you choose so you are not underprotected by having too large a breaker.)

One other note on the space heater - a ceiling or upper wall-mounted ceramic infrared radiant unit is most likely to work best in that application (heats more of the area better), but that would need a dedicated circuit - plus an outlet for the dehumidifier unless you arrange it with a heavy-duty extension cord to use the same outlet. Might or might not be legal in your area - a ceiling mounted heater might be considered "permanent" installation by your code compliance inspectors so might hve to be hard-wired, not use an outlet.
