Question DetailsAsked on 4/22/2020

Are UV Lights installed in the ducts of a Heat Pump really effective in killing 99% of Germs/Bacteria/Viruses/Mold?

I am considering an HVAC contractor installing a UV Germ/Virus Killer to be installed in my Heat Pump. They claim that the UltraMax EZ UV 17" SS-2419 EZ is effective at killing 99% of Germs, Bacteria, Mold and Viruses? Is this a good system to sanitize the air and kill all the germs/bacteria/Viruses, including the Covid 19 virus. Please let me know what system you recommend, if any, and a good HVAC contractor to install the system.

Yes UVC light can kill viruses, but only over time. Not a way to be safe from Covid 19. The UVC light can only treat a small portion of the air going past it, so overtime it might kill all, but that's a lot of time. In hospitals they put several UVC lights in a stright section of duct, so that the air stays in the kill zone long enough to be cleaned, can't do that in a home system. The other issue is, someone coughs spreading Covid 19 in one room, the time it takes for the tiny particles to get to the light or a filter is too long to be safe, also deposits on surfaces will allow the spread of Covid 19.
