Can't boot my HP laptop from USB drive

I forgot the login password of my HP laptop so I made a password reset disk with usb drive. However, my laptop refuses to boot from it. Every time it goes directly to the login screen.

Sounds like you are not overriding the hard drive bootstrap - you need to follow the procedure to tell the computer to boot up from another drive - HP instructions on that for different versions of Windows here - if running a non-windows system google for the instructions from the company that created your OS.

Pay CLOSE attention to instructions on backing up your hard drive BEFORE recreating your password - because commonly (and especially if it crashes or freezes mid-operation) during a password recreation it ends up scrubbing your hard drive of everything on it - so back up all files from it first if the thumb drive startup will allow you to access the hard drive files. SHould if the password reset disk was made right.

Another possible issue - hopefully not your case - not all USB drives are bootable - depends on their formatting, though hopefully when you created it if it was not a bootable drive the system should have told you - but I don't know about that.

there are many ways to help you reset hp or other windows password if you forgot hp password.

Method 1. reset your windows pasword via safe mode.

Step 1: Boot or Reboot your Windows 7 laptop (take Windows 7 as example now).

Step 2: Hold on F8 to enter Advanced Boot Options before the Windows 7 loading screen appears.

Or Press CTRL to enter Advanced Boot Options when computer power on.

Step 3: Choose Safe Mode with Command Prompt in the coming screen.

Method 2. reset your Hp laptop password with command prompt

This is a method that can reset Windows 10 forgotten password with Windows installation CD and command prompt on login screen. By running Command Prompt instead of Utility Manager on locked login screen with help of installation CD, you could easily reset Windows 10 forgotten password or add new administrator with command line.

Step 1: Set command prompt run on locked Windows 10 login screen.

1. Set locked Windows 10 computer boot from Windows 10 DVD.

Before you boot Windows 10 from installation DVD, please confirm that UEFI and Secure Boot are disabled.

2. Open Command Prompt with Shift + F10 keys.

3. Run commands to replace the full utilman.exe with cmd.exe. And before replacement, make a copy of utilman.exe would let you restore it later.

replace utilman exe with cmd exe

4. Remove Windows 10 installation DVD and restart Windows 10.

Method 3. reset your HP password with password reset tools

There are many free windows password reset tools out there like ntpasssord UUKeyes, ophcrack and iseepassword,

what you need to prepare is an USB or DVD.
