Can a formica counter top be covered with granite tiles???

My Formica counter tops are very worn. I am looking to replace them with granite but the cost would be too much for soild slabs of granite. Using grantie tiles is one third of the cost. Is this a smart option to use tiles or are there any draw backs? I do not mind the grout seams since the largest area to be covered is not used for eating or preparing purposes.

Yes you can. If there is a incorporated back splash it will need to be cut out for granite back splash. You can cover the counter top with cement board and then waterproof. I would use an epoxy based grout

NO! And PLEASE do not tile a countertop! Even Formica is a better countertop than granite tile!!

You can usually find heavily discounted granite options if you really want granite. Call all of your local granite fabricators to see what kind of clearance/remnants/overstock they may have.

NO TILE! :( Waste of money.

Particle board (countertop base ) it's not the best base for new counter top . The best 3/4" plywood 15 lb roof paper or 4 mill plastic and durock .
Anothe way Galvinize mash and make a mortar bed (need practice for 2nd ).
and you need Granite Tile , mortar and Grout . If you see how much it's cost (if you do right way) may be Granite level 1 or promo colors not more expensive way. you can found colors like Santa Secilia , Uba-Tube ,Baltic Brown cheap and you can take time found undermound sink and provide to fabricator and save a little money. Some company offer FREE sink if you buy no less then 30 sq/f of Granite.Backslash you can use Tile and not pay full price sq/f.
